# Home Learning Tasks WC 2.11.20

Hello Y5! Here are this week’s home learning activities:

Monday 2nd November

LO: To engage with the text.

In this lesson, we will be introduced to the author and the book and use clues from the front cover and prologue to make some predictions about the story.

Maths:

LO: To understand multiples and factors.

Today we will refamiliarise ourselves with the concepts of multiples and factors. We will use the language of factors and multiples by giving examples, describing rectangular arrays and defining the terms. We will then model how to solve missing number puzzles requiring understanding of the language before letting you have a go independently.

Task: Complete maths lesson 1 worksheet.

Y5M    egg

Y5T     bunny

Tuesday 3rd November

English:

LO: To answer questions on the text.

In this lesson, we will use the text to retrieve and infer answers to questions about chapter 3 - Whiter than White. We will explore the meaning of words and how to use a range of strategies when we come across unfamiliar words in our reading.

Maths:

LO: To use factor pairs.

Today we will be learning how to work systematically to identify the correct number of factors and factor pairs for given numbers, using the notion of factor bugs to help us. We will then develop our learning further by proving that square numbers have an odd number of factors

Task: Complete maths lesson 2 worksheet.

Topic: Anglo-Saxons and Vikings

LC: Can you create a timeline detailing the Viking invasion?

Open and follow the PPT ‘Anglo-Saxons and Vikings’. Today you will learn about the Viking invasion.

Wednesday 4th November

English:

LO: To analyse characters.

In this lesson, we will explore the main characters in the text in more detail. Our main focus is on Miss Root, the new dentist, and the impression of her that we get as we read about her actions and the way in which the previous dentist died. For some people the violent death of the previous dentist will be a sensitive topic. If this applies to you, you may want to do the lesson with an adult. We will look closely at the author's choice of language and characterisation.

Maths:

LO: To understand prime numbers.

Today we will explore numbers with only two factors and define these as prime numbers. We will then play a game that involves making arrays and identifying prime numbers up to 20. Our independent task to conclude the lesson will require all prime numbers up to 100 to be identified by using a range of clues based on multiples and factors.

Task: Complete maths lesson 3 worksheet.

Science: Reproductive cycles.

LC: Why do plants have flowers?

In this lesson, we are going to learn about the different parts of a flower. We will also learn about the stages of a life cycle of a flowering plant as well as some different methods for pollination and seed dispersal.

Thursday 5th November

English:

LO: To answer questions on the text (Part 2).

In this lesson, we will read the beginning of chapter 13 (Impro!), retrieving and inferring information from the text in order to answer questions. This includes understanding and explaining the order of events, as well as characters' feelings.

Maths:

LO: To understand factor and multiple chains.

Today we will use our prior knowledge of multiples and factors to create chains, playing a game whilst investigating number patterns. We will then adapt the rules of the game to create alternative chains, being challenged to try and identify ever increasing lengths of chains.

Task: Complete maths lesson 4 worksheet.

LC: To develop reading for pleasure through personal reflection.

In this lesson, we will explore examples of genre in literature. We will reflect on what reading for pleasure means. We will spend time thinking about different important texts to us and create a 'Reading River' to show our own personal journeys in Reading.

Friday 6th November

English:

LO: To analyse the author's use of language.

In this lesson, we will be analysing the author's choice of language. We will look at vocabulary meaning in depth and how words and phrases have been used specifically to add to an overall atmosphere, created purposefully by the author.

Maths:

LO: To multiply and divide by 10, 100 and 1000.

Today we will be required to explain and demonstrate the process of multiplication and division by 10, 100 and 1000 using different visual representations. This understanding will then enable you to derive facts from known multiplication facts which you can represent and explain. The expectation is that by the end of this lesson you will be confidently able to explain and demonstrate how to multiply and divide by 10, 100 and 1000.

Task: Complete maths lesson 5 worksheet.
