Hello Y5! Here are this week’s home learning activities:

Monday 21st September

English:

This half term we will be exploring the ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ narrative.

LO: To engage with the context of the ‘How to Train Your Dragon' narrative

In this lesson, we will learn about the author, setting and key characters in this narrative and visual narrative. We will also learn about the historical context of some of the characters.

Maths:

This half term we will be learning how to problem solve using addition and subtraction.

LO: To use and explain addition strategies.

In this lesson, we will be learning how to use different addition strategies (e.g. partitioning, commutativity and rounding and adjusting) in order to solve Magic Squares.

Task: complete the maths lesson worksheet

Tuesday 22nd September

English:

LO: To investigate suffixes: Plurals.

In this lesson, we will investigate plural suffixes and adding the s and es suffixes to nouns.

Maths:

LO: To use and explain addition and subtraction strategies.

In this lesson, we will be learning how to use the most efficient addition and subtraction strategies. We will apply this knowledge to solving addition pyramids.

Task: complete maths lesson 2 worksheet.

Topic- History:

This half term we will be learning about the Anglo-Saxons and Scots in the 5th century. You will find out where the invading troops came from and where in Britain they managed to settle. You will go on to investigate how life in Britain changed as a result.

LC: I can describe why, where and when the Scots and Anglo-Saxons invaded Britain.

Open the PPT ‘the invaders’ and work through the slides.

Task 1: Use the information you have learnt to write about the Scots and Anglo-Saxon invasions.

Task 2: Label your map to show the seven kingdoms that Anglo-Saxon Britain was divided into.

Wednesday 23rd September

English:

LO: To explore simple and compound sentences.

In this lesson, we will explore simple and compound sentences. We will look at what a sentence is and how sentences are made up of clauses and phrases. We will then discuss what a main clause is and how these are used to create simple and compound sentences.

Maths:

LO: To add and subtract using multiples of 10, 100, 1000, 10 000 and 100 000.

In this lesson, we will learn how to use the 'derived facts' and 'make 10' strategies to solve equations involving multiples of 10, 100, 1000, 10 000 and 100 000.

Task: complete maths lesson 3 worksheet.

Thursday 24th September

English:

LO:  To identify the C and S features of an opening scene.

In this lesson, we will explore the opening scene, generating vocabulary to describe the sounds and the setting. We will also use our new vocabulary to begin to write descriptive sentences about the setting.

Maths:

LO: Adding using the column method

In this lesson, we will be using the column method to add two four-digit numbers where regrouping is required in one column.

Task: complete maths lesson 4 worksheet.

Science:

This half term we will be learning about forces.

LC: What are forces?

In this lesson, we will learn what forces are. We will also learn about contact forces and non-contact forces. Finally, we will test our knowledge with some application questions.

Friday 25th September

English:

LO: To develop a rich understanding of words associated with water

In this lesson, we will introduce new vocabulary, identify word pairs and synonyms and apply the vocabulary in sentences.

Maths:

LO: To add using the column method, when multiple columns require regrouping.

In this lesson, we will be using the column method to add two four-digit numbers where regrouping is required in multiple columns.
