Hello Y5! Here are this week’s home learning tasks:

Monday 5th October


LO:  To generate vocabulary to describe the characters

In this lesson, we will think carefully about the characters Hiccup and Toothless. We will generate precise adjectives to describe them and use these to write sentences about them.



LO: Representing comparison word problems

In this lesson, we will be using comparison bar models to represent addition and subtraction one-step word problems.

Task: Complete maths lesson 1 worksheet.


History: Village life

LC: Can I describe a typical Anglo-Saxon village and explain what everyday life was like for the people who lived there?

In this lesson you will learn about Anglo-Saxon settlements and village life. Open and follow the PPT.

Task: My Anglo-Saxon Village

Use the class list about Anglo-Saxon village life to design and label your own Anglo-Saxon village.


Tuesday 6th October


LO: To investigate suffixes: - ate -en -ify -ise

In this lesson, we will investigate suffixes that change the word class of a word from a noun/ adjective to a verb and explore appropriate spelling rules associated with the addition of -ate -en -ify - ise.



LO: To solve two-step word problems.

In this lesson, we will be using bar models to represent two-step addition and subtraction word problems.

Task: complete maths lesson 2 worksheet.



LC: What are non-contact forces?

In this lesson, we will recap the definition of non-contact forces. We will also investigate gravity and gravitational force and learn about Galileo by completing an investigation. Finally, we will learn about magnetic force, including some uses for magnets.

Task: Complete Science lesson 4 worksheet.


Wednesday 7th October


LO: To explore complex sentences.

In this lesson we will explore complex sentences. We discuss that they are made up of main clauses and subordinate clauses. We will review what these are and then the pupils have a chance to practise writing their own.



LO: Applying and consolidating: Word problems and bar models.

In this lesson, we will be recapping how to use bar models to represent word problems which require addition or subtraction.

Task: Complete maths lesson 3 worksheet.


History: Anglo-Saxon Gods

LC: I can explain the religious beliefs and practices of the early Anglo-Saxon people and I know and can describe some of the gods they worshipped.

In this lesson you will learn about Anglo-Saxon religious beliefs and the gods they worshipped. Open and follow the PPT.

Task: Religion Quiz - Write your own quiz about Anglo-Saxon religion and gods using the ‘Religion quiz’ activity sheet.


Thursday 8th October


LO: To plan the first part of a build-up scene.

In this lesson, we will plan the first section of our writing for the build-up scene in the film 'How to Train Your Dragon'.



LO: Adding and subtracting using the 'round and adjust' strategy

In this lesson, we will learn how to use the 'round and adjust' strategy to solve addition and subtraction equations.

Task: complete maths lesson 4 worksheet.



LC: Which factors affect an object's ability to float?

In this lesson, we will be discussing upthrust (or buoyancy) in more detail. We will discuss what density is and how it affects floating. We will also discuss the link between weight and upthrust. Finally, we will make some predictions which we will test.


Friday 9th October


LO: To develop a rich understanding of words associated with clumsiness

In this lesson, we will introduce new vocabulary, identify word pairs and synonyms and apply the vocabulary in sentences.



LO: To add and subtract using partitioning.

In this lesson, we will use partitioning to add and subtract large integers, both where regrouping is required and where it is not needed.
