Relationships and Sex Education

Vision

By the time children leave Broad Oak Community Primary school, we want them to be able to make informed choices about their lives, to be able to contribute in a positive way to society and have the emotional intelligence to look after their own mental health.

Intent

At Broad Oak Primary School, good relationships are fundamental to our ethos and our success in being a happy, caring and safe school. Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) is lifelong learning about relationships, emotions, looking after ourselves, different families, sex, sexuality and sexual health. We aim for the children in our school to acquire the appropriate knowledge, develop their skills and form positive beliefs, values and attitudes. RSE has a key part to play in the personal, social, moral and spiritual development of young people.

What is RSE?
RSE is the new curriculum that the DfE have published that must be now implemented throughout primary and secondary schools.

The document states:
- In primary schools, we want the subjects to put in place the key building blocks of healthy, respectful relationships, focusing on family and friendships, in all contexts, including online. This will sit alongside the essential understanding of how to be healthy.

The aim is to:
- help children to develop the ability to be able to deal with the challenges that they will face as they move through the different stages of their lives.

RSE
1) Relationships Education - compulsory at Primary level
2) Relationships and Sex Education - compulsory at Secondary level and optional at Primary level (however we are opting into this part of the curriculum)
3) Health Education - compulsory at Primary level

The curriculum covers a wide range of objectives that range from recognising happiness in families, the difference between families, how to keep healthy, the impact of drugs and alcohol, and in Year 6 looking at mental illness and some elements of sex education.

See the attached document at the bottom of the page which cover all the objectives being taught at Broad Oak during out RSE units.

The areas covered by the end of Primary are:
- Families and People Who Care for me
- Caring Friendships
- Respectful Relationships
- Online Relationships
- Being Safe
- Mental Wellbeing
- Internet Safety and Harms
- Physical Health and Fitness
- Healthy Eating
- Drugs, Alcohol and Tobacco
- Health and Prevention
- Basic First Aid
- Changing Adolescent Body (between 9-11 years old)

Sex Education

Children will begin to be introduced to elements of Sex Education from Year 2 (correct names for genitals), which will increase through Years 4, 5 and 6. The RSE policy is available upon request from the school office.  Parents do have the option to withdraw children from Sex Education lessons if they wish.

What our pupils say about RSE

"I like learning in RSE because we do lots of discussion activities and we have learnt when something is an emergency and when to ring the emergency services"

"I have learnt about why my family is important and what they do is because they love me"
